Many of us have faced situations where a UPI payment gets stuck or fails, leading to awkward moments when we’re left without cash. If you’ve encountered this problem, here are six steps you can take to resolve it and complete your transaction.
1. Check Your Daily UPI Payment Limit
Banks and payment gateways impose daily limits on UPI transactions. According to NPCI guidelines, you can transfer up to Rs. 1 lakh via UPI in a single day. Additionally, many banks restrict the number of UPI transactions to about 10 per day. If you’ve exceeded these limits, you’ll need to wait 24 hours for the limits to reset. If you’re in a pinch, try making the payment from a different bank account or use an alternative payment method.
2. Link Multiple Bank Accounts to Your UPI ID
Busy bank servers are a common cause of UPI transaction failures. To avoid this, link more than one bank account to your UPI ID. If one bank’s servers are down, you can switch to another linked bank account to complete your transaction.
3. Verify Receiver Details

4. Enter the Correct UPI PIN
With so many passwords to remember, it’s easy to forget your UPI PIN. If you’ve entered an incorrect PIN, your transaction will not go through. If you’ve forgotten your PIN, you can reset it by selecting the “Forget UPI PIN” option and following the steps to set a new one. For those who frequently forget their PIN, consider writing it down in a secure place, but ensure no one else can access it to avoid unauthorized transactions.
5. Ensure a Stable Internet Connection
A stable internet connection is crucial for successful UPI transactions. If your payment gets stuck, check your network connection. Move to a location with better reception, or ask someone to share their hotspot. You can also try restarting your device or toggling airplane mode on and off to reset your internet connection.
6. Utilize UPI Lite
To address issues related to slow bank servers and unstable internet connections, NPCI introduced UPI Lite. UPI Lite allows for instant payments of up to Rs. 200 without requiring a UPI PIN or relying on bank servers. Users can make payments up to Rs. 2,000 twice a day, with a total daily limit of Rs. 4,000. Currently, UPI Lite is available on Paytm and PhonePe, with more payment apps expected to support this feature soon.
